Gyles & George

Gyles & George is the British knitwear that created the novelty sweater. The brand’s quirky designs — including the famous “I’m A Luxury” jumper and iconic Zodiac knits — have been beloved by pop stars and royalty since the 1980s, counting Sir Elton John, Princess Diana, Hugh Bonneville, Joanna Lumley, Keith Richards, Dwyane Wade, and Blanca Miro among their fans.

These designs are the creation of Gyles Brandreth and George Hostler — and they are as colorful, eccentric, and British as their creators themselves.

Gyles Brandreth – a writer, entertainer, broadcaster, and sometime Member of British Parliament – is also a former European Monopoly champion; founder of an award-winning teddy bear museum; president of both the Oscar Wilde Society and the Association of British Scrabble Players; a renowned expert on Winnie the Pooh and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland; and former Lord Commissioner of the Treasury in the British government.

George Hostler was a sculptor by training who exhibited in Britain, Europe, and Australia before deciding to abandon his hammer and chisel in favor of knitting needles. He was one of the world’s most sought after and admired knitwear designers, whose work was worn by the beautiful and famous on both sides of the Atlantic – not least, of course, by Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales.

Gyles & George virtually invented the novelty sweater with their “wit knits.” Their designs have been making people smile for over forty years — but their quirky sense of humor, homespun knitting patterns, and nostalgic ’80s aesthetic is more relevant than ever.
